Combined water and gas atomization technology is widely used in producing alloy powders for metal injection molding, such as iron based powder, nickel based powder, copper based powder, silver based powder, etc. By adjusting the process, different particle size ranges of powder can be produced.

Advantages
Atomization method is mostly adopted for metal powder production, using high pressure water or inert gas to crush metal liquid. According to the atomizing medium, atomization can be divided into gas atomization and water atomization. Water atomization process is suitable for treating oxygen insensitive alloys. Sphericity of water atomized metal powder is not good, the shape of powder is irregular, but water atomized powder has good compressibility and formability. Gas atomization process is suitable for treating oxygen sensitive alloys. Gas atomized metal powder has good sphericity, good fluidity, high purity (low oxygen content, few non-metallic impurity), high quality of powder metallurgy product, but relative high production costs.

① The production cost is lower than gas atomization equipment, it’s suitable for mass production and R&D application.
② Sphericity of powder made by combined water and gas atomization equipment is better and application range is wider than water atomization equipment. Most metals and their alloys can be made powder by combined water and gas atomization equipment.
③ Due to the addition of gas medium, the cooling rate of droplet can be slowed down, which is conducive to the sphericity of droplet. The combined water and gas atomization equipment produces subspherical or spherical powder with high loose density.
④ Fine powder (D50: 5-10μm) can be manufactured by adjusting the process, to meet the requirements for the use of fine powder.
